May 28 -- The Real Dirt on Farmer John, directed by Taggart Siegal, is the story of Farmer John, known as a pariah within his community, who transforms his farm into a place of free expression and revolutionary agriculture amidst the failing economy, arson, and vicious gossip circles. The Real Dirt on Farmer John will be play at The Sandwich Factory on Wednesday, May 28th starting at 8 p.m. Snacks will be provided and the film is free and open to the public. 2008 SLO Wine & Grill Affair, Saturday, June 7th 2008, 12-4 p.m. at Per Bacco Cellars, on the beautiful Filipponi Ranch. Net proceeds will go to Transitions Mental Health Association. This friendly competition will showcase the incredible wines, food and lifestyle of San Luis Obispo. Baileyana and tangent Wineries, Ortman Family Vineyards, Pozo Valley, Sextant Vinyards, Wood Winery, Talley Vineyards and Per Bacco Cellars will create delectable bites of signature grilled dishes paired with their own, select wines. Attendees will choose People’s Choice and a panel of five “local celebrities” (including Katy Budge, freelance food and wine writer and owner of CasaFestiva.com), will choose Best of Show. In addition to food and wine tasting competition there will be an art show, live music, local cheese, olive oil and chocolate vendors. Transitions is a non-profit organization that helps children and adults live, work and grow in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Benefits the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation, a non profit organization that provides free access to performing and other artistic pursuits for the youth of the community, without charge. Local chefs compete with their Paella creations for the Best and Most Creative Paella Prize Award. These wonderful dishes are paired with Paso Pinot Noirs for a glorious food and wine experience. National Hunger Awareness Day: June 10
In 2008, The Food Bank Coalition's goal is to exceed the $115,000 donated by the generous citizens of San Luis Obispo County on our first “One Dollar on One Day” campaign last year. The campaign marks National Hunger Awareness Day, falling at the beginning of summer to remind us that hunger is a problem for our fellow citizens year ‘round, not just during the holidays. Your support of the Food Bank Coalition will help us feed over 30,000 people in SLO County who are at risk of hunger. Many are the elderly, and nearly half are children. Old-fashioned Threshing Bee at Jack Creek Farms, Templeton, September 6, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring the whole family for a fun afternoon. Step back into a simpler time and connect with the past. Starting with standing wheat we will bind, stack, thresh, sack, clean and grind the grain into flour the same way it was done in the early 1900s. We will have several restored antique tractors on display. Visit with the farm animals, view the growing crops (including a large pumpkin patch and gourd field), play horseshoes, lasso Bailey our dummy roping steer, and sample honey, apple cider, pomegranate granitas, fudge and jam.
